What Is Assisted Living?
Assisted living communities provide housing, meals, and help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and medication management. Residents maintain their independence while having trained staff available when needed.
Texas HHSC Licensing
In Texas, assisted living facilities are licensed by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) under two categories:
- Type A: Serves residents who are capable of following directions and taking action for self-preservation. Lower acuity needs.
- Type B: May serve residents who are incapable of following directions or taking action for self-preservation. Higher acuity needs, including some memory care.

- Prepared meals in a communal dining room
