What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities provide housing, meals, and help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and medication management. Residents maintain their independence while having trained staff available when needed.

Texas HHSC Licensing

In Texas, assisted living facilities are licensed by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) under two categories:

  • Type A: Serves residents who are capable of following directions and taking action for self-preservation. Lower acuity needs.
  • Type B: May serve residents who are incapable of following directions or taking action for self-preservation. Higher acuity needs, including some memory care.

What to Expect

  • Private or semi-private apartments with kitchenettes
  • Prepared meals in a communal dining room
  • Assistance with bathing, grooming, and dressing
  • Medication reminders or management
  • Social activities and outings
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
  • 24-hour staff availability

Cost Considerations

Houston-area assisted living costs vary widely based on location, room type, and level of care. Most communities charge a base rate plus additional fees for higher care levels. Ask about all-inclusive versus tiered pricing models.
